There’s something undeniably nostalgic about waffles: crispy edges, soft centers, smothered in butter and jam. Norwegian waffles are in their own category of cozy comfort. Soft, thin, lightly sweet, and traditionally baked in an iron that forms five sweet little hearts, these waffles bring more than breakfast to the table. They bring a story.
Since Valentine’s Day is the season of hearts, chocolate, flowers, and sugary sparkle, these whimsical waffles make the perfect centerpiece for a Valentine’s Day grazing board. Whether you’re hosting a Galentine’s brunch, a family breakfast celebration, or a cozy date night in, these Nordic hearts are equal parts delicious and adorable.
Why Norwegian Waffles Are Different
Unlike thick Belgian waffles, Norwegian waffles are intentionally thin, tender, and a little bit custardy thanks to ingredients like sour cream, buttermilk, or yogurt.
A few signature differences:
- They’re softer, not crispy
- They cook quickly
- They freeze beautifully
- And yes! The heart shape is traditional, not just trendy
These waffles feel like childhood memories, grandmother kitchens, and cozy winter mornings all blended into a batter bowl.
The Sweet Tradition of Heart-Shaped Waffles
In Norwegian homes, heart waffles aren’t “special occasion food.” They’re “drop-in guests” food, “snow day” food, and “just because” food. They’re served with brunost (a caramel-flavored Norwegian brown cheese), sour cream, and raspberry jam.
But the heart shape?
That’s the part that makes everyone smile! Kids, grandparents, and especially guests seeing them for the first time.
Heart-shaped waffles on a Valentine’s Day board celebrate that tradition while adding a touch of charm that feels perfectly on theme without being overly commercial or complicated. If you prefer, individual heart shaped waffle irons work too!
It’s a family tradition in our home to make Norwegian waffles the night before Valentine’s day and then have a beautiful grazing board the morning of!
