If your plants aren’t growing as well as you hoped, the right fertilizer can make a huge difference. I’ve been using a simple, natural mix that covers everything. It’s beginner friendly and easy to measure! To make it easier, I’ve also compiled links for each ingredient!
My fertilizer recipe
2 cups blood meal – nitrogen for lush, leafy growth
2 cups bone meal – phosphorus for strong roots and flowers
1 cup langbeinite – potassium, magnesium, and sulfur for overall plant health
¼ cup azomite – trace minerals to keep plants thriving
🌿 Tweaks for Different Plants
🥬 Leafy Greens (lettuce, kale, spinach):
Blood meal: 2.5 cups, everything else remains the same
Extra nitrogen helps your greens grow lush leaves without flowering too early.
🍅 Fruiting / Flowering Plants (tomatoes, peppers, squash, beans):
Blood meal: 1.5 cups, everything else remains the same
Lower nitrogen keeps plants from growing too leafy, while phosphorus & potassium support flowers and fruit.
⚖️ How to Apply
For new beds: mix into the top 2–4 inches of soil For established plants: sprinkle lightly around the base and water in.
Quick Rule of Thumb:
Leafy plants: ~1–2 tbsp
Fruiting plants: ~2–3 tbsp
Seedlings: ½–1 tsp
Optional boost: add compost or worm castings for soil microbes Reapply: every 4–6 weeks during the growing season
Why I Love This Mix
It’s all-natural, complete (N–P–K + trace minerals), and easy. My plants respond fast, and the results are visible in both growth and harvests. Even small gardens can thrive with this mix!
